FIA feels strongly that client access to CCPs is the cornerstone of a resilient global derivatives markets and notes two particular areas of interest to its members and to regulators: the adverse impact of current capital rules, and suggestions to assist portability of positions in the event of default. In regards to the portability of positions, FIA recommends three practical measures that could improve the process: 1) harmonization of data formats and fields; 2) use of LEIs or universally understood client identifiers; and 3) common timeframes for porting across CCPs.

Europe extends UK clearing equivalence to 2025

The European Commission has extended by three years the equivalence ruling that allows UK clearing houses to support European clients. The EC has extended the current equivalence arrangement until June 30 2025. It also said it will launch a consultation on incentives to increase the attractiveness of European Union central counterparties (CCPs) to reduce systemic reliance on UK clearing houses. The incentives will be published in the second half of 2022. "First, the aim is to build domestic capacity, making the EU a more competitive and cost-efficient clearing hub and to enhance EU CCP's liquidity,” the EC said, “Secondly, it is essential that risks are appropriately managed and the EU's supervisory framework for CCPs is strengthened.”
